Explosion-protected equipment is designed to prevent a potential ignition source from igniting the surrounding explosive atmosphere. Selection cannot be based on enclosure strength alone; area classification, gas or dust group and temperature class must be assessed together.
What should be considered?
Zones 0, 1 and 2 apply to gas, vapour and mist hazards, while Zones 20, 21 and 22 apply to combustible dust. Equipment marking must match the area risk study and actual process conditions.
The explosion protection document, ambient temperature, ingress protection, installation method and maintenance access should all be reviewed during technical selection.
